Now that most Austrian and German school children are enjoying their summer holiday, we are also looking forward to a relaxing summer company holiday. The latest Norm IEC 61340-5-1 ED1 introduces a ESD-Control-Plan.
The goal is to further improve existing ESD protection and to make the ESD protection plan more transparent. Therefore, all future training seminars will include preparing a draft of your individual ESD Control Plan.

The Industry Council issues a White Paper on ESD Target Levels
In August, the Industry Council on ESD Target Levels issued „White Paper 1: A Case for Lowering Component Level HBM/MM ESD Specifications and Requirements". This paper has been placed in the Internet as a discussion topic on the ESD-Forum´s website (http://www.esd-forum.de in the category News). This site facilitates a council of well-known manufacturers and ESD experts whose goal it is to discuss and evaluate the strength and resistance properties of electronic components.

New Standards and Norm Versions have been released
The latest version (Ed.01 (2007/08) of IEC 61340-5-1 and of IEC/TR 61340-5-2 has been released. This issued version is the recognized international standard and has been published in English and French. The German edition is expected by year´s end.
Both publications can be order through Beuth-Verlag (Beuth-Publications, www.iec-normen.de).

Updated Version of U.S. Standards ANSI 20.20 is now available
Here is something new for all of our customers that have clients in the USA. On the homepage of the ESD Association www.esda.org there is the newest update of the ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 Standards entitled „Revision of ANSI/ESD S20.20-1999". There have been quite a few changes made to the old version. For example: the maximum ground resistance allowed for seats is now <1x10E9 Ohm. Latest developments in European standards presented at the 9th ESD-Forum:
A revision of ICE 6143-5-1 is planned for 2006. The members of the Standards Commission announced during a podium discussion that the standards will be revised towards the guidelines set by the ISO. A similar revision of the American ANSI 20.20 has already begun.
In the future, only minimum standards are required for all ESD protective elements. Furthermore, every company should develop a plan to control ESD which contains a documentation of each protective element implemented and its qualities. The documentation of the knowledge level of each staff member will also be part of the ESD control plan. Each company will develop their own individual plan. In this way, the suggestions of companies which had already demanded flexibility in implementing the ESD norms will be put into effect. An announcement is not expected until 2007.

Norms create certainty. The European Norm DIN EN 61340-4-5 is finally published
The Norm 61340-4-5 describes how the user can verify whether or not the investmentin ESD flooring and shoes has resulted in obtaining a specific goal. Each unit should not be viewed separately, but should be examined using criteria that takes all ESD aspects into account. The ESD Coordinator can now prove without a doubt that the wearing of ESD shoes on the ESD flooring have resulted in the desired effect, in this case the continual personal charge of under 100 V. Instead of stating that our workers must be sufficiently grounded because the flooring and shoes have a certain characteristic according to the data sheets, a coordinator can show that x amount of voltage occurs when the shoes are worn on the flooring. This specific information makes it much easier to plan and implement a ESD protection plan.

3M Static Control closes its European subsidiaries
It has been officially confirmed that 3M Static Control is permanently pulling out of the European market. Due to heavy losses and problematic distribution, the American company has decided to turn its focus away from static control products. All of its business activity in this area will be halted by the end of the year.
